The Kennedy Autopsy Minute by Minute
By Alex Harris

The autopsy photographs of President John F. Kennedy are among the most sobering and controversial pieces of evidence in the historical record. The Kennedy Autopsy Minute by Minute not only examines these images in detail but also challenges readers to confront the stark reality they depict.
While these photographs may be unsettling, their importance cannot be overstated—they provide direct, unfiltered documentation of the President’s wounds and the procedures undertaken that night at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Rather than turning away from the discomfort they evoke, readers should use that shock as a means to critically engage with the evidence, placing it in its proper historical and forensic context. Only by doing so can we move closer to an honest and accurate understanding of what transpired.
WARNING: Viewer Discretion is Advised.
Once the President’s body was placed on the autopsy table, John Thomas Stringer Jr, the civilian photographer put in charge of producing Kennedy’s autopsy photographs began taking photographs of the obvious head wound. Stringer started on the President’s left side, producing 4 views of the left side of the President’s head and shoulders. One of them is reproduced below.

This photograph, identified as either 1.1 or 1.2 by the author (refer to the attached Appendix for inventory), shows the aforementioned view of the left side of the President’s head and shoulders.

A color photograph showing the same view as the one above. This photograph is identified by the author as photograph 1.29.
Presumably, Stringer takes 2 left superior views of the President’s head, but these are not specifically mentioned in the inventory. It is assumed that the left superior views are photographs 1.3 and 1.4 in the inventory in Appendix I.
After this, Stringer moves to the head of the autopsy table and produces 4 direct posterior superior views of the head, showing the extensive damage to the head. Two of these are reproduced below.

A direct posterior superior view of the head. This is most likely photograph 1.7.

A more vertical view of the head, taken from the head of the autopsy table. This is likely photograph 1.8.

A similar color view, though notably slightly different from 1.8 above. This seems to be photograph 1.33.
After Stringer takes the aforementioned direct posterior superior views, he moves to the right side of the President and takes a total of 4 views of the President’s right side.
Stringer first produces 2 right superior views, then moves towards the center of the autopsy table and produces 2 oblique views, depicting the President’s upper body and face.
The oblique view is commonly referred to as the stare-of-death photo, as the President’s eyes are seen to be open, giving an eerie feeling to the photographs. The right superior and oblique views are reproduced below.

The right superior view, showing the extensive damage to the head, as well as the metal head rest and Navy towel on the autopsy table. This photograph is identified by the author to be photograph 1.26, 1.27 or 1.28.

The right oblique view, depicting the President’s upper body and head. This photograph is identified by the author to be photograph 1.5.

A second right oblique view, with the camera settings adjusted slightly to provide a brighter view of the body. This photograph is identified by the author to be photograph 1.6.
After producing a near-comprehensive series of photographs of the head and upper body, Stringer takes a photograph of an unidentified portion of the head. This photograph is often dubbed the “mystery photo”, as its placement on the head has proven difficult to locate.
The photographs in the inventory seeming to match this photograph are 1.17 and 1.18. This would indicate that this photograph depicts the “wound of entrance in [the] posterior skull, following [the] reflection of the scalp.” Similar color photographs, being 1.44 and 1.45, are not available. The author is unable to identify these photographs further.

The first of the two “mystery photos”, seeming to show an area of hair towards the top, which may indicate its location

The second of the two “mystery photos” showing a near identical view. The only notable difference between the first and second mystery photos is a reflection seen in the second, which was likely caused by the flash’s proximity to the head.
After Dr. Finck arrived and advised Stringer and the Bethesda autopsy team that a bullet had struck the President’s back and/or neck, they began searching the body to determine if the bullet had become lodged, or had gone through. Stringer produced a number of photos after Finck and the autopsy team had lifted the President’s body to rest on his left shoulder.
The first of these is a view of the back, with a ruler pressed against the spine and a hand holding the President’s right shoulder. Two photographs of this view were produced, and both are nearly identical. Both are reproduced below.

The first of the two photographs. An identifiable feature of this one is that the President’s ear seems to be touching the doctor’s arm. This photograph is identified by the author to be photograph 1.11.

The second of the two photos. The President’s ear is now separated from the doctor’s arm. This photograph is identified by the author to be 1.12.
Finally, photographs are produced of the head wound while the body is laid on its side. Only two of these are currently available, being one in color and one in black and white. They are reproduced below.

A superior view of the President’s head, now with the brain removed, showing the large defect in the scalp. This photograph is identified by the author to be photograph 1.15.

A more direct view of the back of the head, showing the blood-soaked hair and what many have identified as a wound in the back of the head. It has been advised to the author that this “white” mark is actually seen to be pinkish-red in better copies, indicating that this is from a low quality copy. This photograph is identified by the author to be photograph 1.42.

Thank you. This is very thorough.
The back of JFK’s head is very clearly intact in the autopsy photographs. We can put to rest this myth that the back of his head had a large hole or was blown out. There is a small wound in the back of his head near the top “crown: or “cowlick” area. Upon examination of his skull it was noted that this hole was beveled inwards proving beyond ALL doubt that this was an entrance wound from a shot from the rear.
The dispute on this point remains because the gloved hand pictured is holding the back of the head skin flap thus keeping the exposure of the defect in the skull hidden
hidden.
