Stalin Ballots Dying Dark Comedy

On today’s episode of Popcorn Politics, Ted Edmonson and I discussed the preliminary Presidential results out of Indiana and Kentucky.

Those results showed a massive over performance in historically Republican districts over Hillary Clinton. This result made Ted and I think that the polling was correct, and in those areas, it was.

We also discussed the discrepancy between election day votes and mail-in ballots, specifically in Georgia and Florida where older voters and black voters didn’t necessarily trust mail-in voting. As we saw in Florida, the discrepancy was massive, but not in Broward county which was majority African American. What we didn’t get to see was the complete collapse of Democratic support among Latino voters. Fayette county and the others we reported on, were either white working-class counties or suburbs, both of which favored Biden heavily.

In hour 2, Carmine Savastano and I discussed the 2017 film Death of Stalin. The Death of Stalin is a satire about the power struggle that begins in the days after Joseph Stalin’s death.

Steve Buscemi stars as Nikita Khrushchev and Jason Issacs steals the show as Georgy Zhukov. Their machinations and scheming make this movie. The chess match between Khrushchev and Beria is great, as are all the performances. The script is written in a similar way to Jojo Rabbit in that the tone very easily shifts frequently throughout the film. This movie is hilarious, but it’s gallows humor. This isn’t a feel-good movie that you can use as a pick-me-up, but if you need a comedic punch to the gut, this will fill that role.
