Snyder Cut Uncut Recut

On this special episode of Popcorn Politics, Eric Cunningham and I break down the highly anticipated, Zack Snyder cut of Justice League.

This tortured production which featured 2 very different directors in Zack Snyder and Joss Wheadon ended up producing 2 films that have radically different interpretations of the characters and story they tell. And that’s not surprising given that Warner Bros. mandated that Wheadon’s film be half the length of Snyder’s.

Wheadon had an impossible task that even the most talented filmmaker would’ve failed. When you understand all that, it’s amazing that Wheadon’s cut is even coherent in the first place.

Zack Snyder is a very visual director, using imagery to tell his story, Wheadon focuses on dialogue to tell his story.

Overall I find the Snyder interpretation to be vastly superior to Joss Wheadon’s take. Snyder’s vision completes his trilogy in a way that only he could, connecting story threads and character development across 3 films to create his final version of these characters, specifically Superman and Cyborg.

Superman and Cyborg have fully realized character arcs that didn’t exist in the original film.

The emotional core of Snyder’s take is Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, his struggles inform the themes of the film, and his character unlocks the story. At 4 hours, the movie drags a bit at times and makes some questionable choices, like adding the Martian Manhunter and Joker in inconsequential roles. It’s cool to see both but they add absolutely nothing to the film.

Overall Zack Snyder’s Justice League delivers on everything it promised; incredible visuals, a thematically consistent bookend to this trilogy, and most importantly, an enjoyable film.

I hope you enjoy the episode as Eric and I discuss all of this and more!
