In today’s episode of Popcorn Politics, Ted Edmonson and I discuss the New York mayoral election that seems to have narrowed to Andrew Yang and Eric Adams. For NYC progressives this is the worst-case scenario, Eric Adams has deep ties with police unions and is openly hostile to progressives while Yang is generally seen as a roadblock to progressive priorities and as an incompetent manager.

The problem for the left in this race is that the viable progressive alternatives either aren’t gaining momentum or falling to scandals. Scott Stringer faces a sexual harassment allegation while Maya Wiley and Dianne Morales struggle to break from the pack.

At the same time, the NYT endorses Kathryn Garcia, who’s in 7th place. We also discuss Matthew McConaghy signaling a run for governor of Texas and Val Demmings announcing a run for Senate in Florida against incumbent Marco Rubio.

We break down all this and more.

In hour 2, Chuck Ochelli and I discuss Spike Lee’s BlackKKlansman. The story of detective Ron Stallworth, this film is very different unique in the filmography of Spike Lee while also obviously being his work.

Every performer brings their A-game and is bolstered by an incredibly nuanced script that knows when to take the material seriously and when to have a bit of fun. In the same vein as Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, this movie cycles through tonal shifts very frequently but always earn the shift.

Spike Lee isn’t a director that I usually enjoy, I find his style hit and miss, but BlackKKlansman is a definite hit. The characters feel appropriately conflicted but don’t feel wishy-washy.

Topher Grace stands out in his portrayal of David Duke, the KKK grand wizard, but John David Washington steals the show every time he’s on-screen. Hope you enjoy the show!
