Melt Downs DNC Showdowns

On today’s episode of Popcorn Politics, Brian Kramer and I discussed the elections that took place on June 23rd, and a few beyond it.

We spent the bulk of our time talking about Kentucky’s Senate Democratic Primary between Amy McGrath and Representative Charles Booker. This primary is interesting because the national party came down on the side of McGrath and the state party came down on Bookers.

Both would lose to McConnell in November, but the 2 candidates represent different theories of winning in red states. Booker drives turnout in big cities while McGrath is better positioned to win moderate voters.

We also discussed Andrew Romanoff’s longshot primary against former Governor John Hickenlooper for the Senate seat currently held by Corey Gardner. Hickenlooper is the prohibitive favorite, but due to many breaking scandals, Romanoff has been looked at again. But should he?

Brian and I also tackle the controversial record of Andrew Romanoff, and how he might not be who he appears.

In the second hour, 25 rejoins us to discuss the HBO miniseries Chernobyl.

Chernobyl released last year and centers around researcher Valery Legasov and Communist official Boris Scherbina, and how they navigate the cleanup and investigation.

Chernobyl is a masterclass in television storytelling. In 5 episodes the show establishes everything it needs to, gives proper growth to its characters, and has a satisfying conclusion that delivers what I consider to be among TV’s best episodes.

The care that went into the construction of each episode and each storyline, is stunning. Even minor stories have ample development.

The quote that will always stick with me from this series is in episode 5, “Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later that debt is paid”
