Infinity Wars Political Scores

On today’s episode of Popcorn Politics, Eric Cunningham and I discussed the Alaska state legislature madness along with Senate confirmation hearings for Neera Tanden and Deb Haaland.

The Alaska State Legislature is in turmoil because the representatives can’t agree on a Speaker of the House, and without one, nothing can happen. Constant arguing and political gamesmanship to keep the traditional coalition alive continues despite efforts to defeat Republicans who side with the Democratic minority have failed. And it seems that Neera Tanden’s nomination to lead the Office of Budget Management will also fail as Senator Joe Manchin breaks with the party to block her, while Senator Bernie Sanders remains noncommittal. Tanden is controversial for criticizing basically every Senator responsible for her confirmation, including fellow liberal Bernie Sanders.

Meanwhile Deb Haaland will likely pass comfortably despite being significantly more progressive than Tanden, this can largely be attributed to her being the first Native American to be nominated to the Interior Department, an important milestone for the department that oversees native land.

In hour 2 Eric and I discussed Avengers Infinity War as part of our lead up to WandaVision.

Infinity War is the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe to that point and pulls every big plot point back in, along with the major characters.

What really sticks out though is the emphasis on Thanos as the villain. The Russo brothers call him the main character and it shows throughout the movie.

All the big character beats are his or directly because of him. He has the most pivotal scene of the film when he tosses Gamora off a cliff. It’s not my favorite MCU movie but it’s a feat to bring all these elements together and not crush the movie under that weight.

I hope you enjoy the show!
